Celebrity Cruises sells itself as “modern luxury,” and in practice it lands as a polished, grown-up premium line — design-led ships and a quieter register than the big family brands, but still a mainstream ship with families aboard. What earns Celebrity a place here isn’t the whole vessel; it’s The Retreat, the suite-class enclave folded inside the Edge-series ships — a private world you can book into and largely never leave.

The Retreat is the ship-within-a-ship done properly. Book a Retreat suite and you get a personal butler, a private restaurant in Luminae — its own menu, with signature dishes from Daniel Boulud, served nowhere else on board — and The Retreat Lounge, a 24/7 private space for a quiet drink away from the main bars. It’s the enclave model at its most complete: your own rooms, your own dining, your own crowd.

But the water is the reason it’s in this directory. The Retreat Sundeck is a private outdoor deck reserved for suite guests, with a pool and hot tub, sun loungers and cabanas, and pool butlers working the deck with cocktails and cold towels. On a ship that otherwise has to serve everyone, this is the calm, grown-up water — a top-deck pool you’re sharing with a small suite-class crowd instead of the whole manifest. For a slow afternoon in the water without the main-pool scrum, it’s exactly the kind of space this section exists to find.

One honest caveat, and it matters more here than on the adults-only lines: The Retreat is an enclave, not an adults-only ship. Celebrity carries families, and the wider decks have kids and family zones; The Retreat itself has no 18-plus rule, so it isn’t a guaranteed kid-free bubble — it simply reads calm and adult in practice, especially on the Sundeck. If you want a whole ship with no children anywhere, Virgin Voyages is the cleaner call. If you want a genuinely luxe private enclave on a stylish premium ship — one that sails well beyond the usual warm-water loop, round-trip to the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, the Mediterranean from Barcelona, and Alaska from Seattle — The Retreat is one of the best versions of that at sea.
