Explora Journeys
MSC Group's ultra-luxury line — all-suite, every suite with an ocean-facing terrace, and more pools than most ships its size. Adult in feel rather than strictly adults-only, and one of the calmest, most water-forward ships in this section.
Explora Journeys is MSC Group’s move upmarket — a clean break from the megaship brand, built as an all-suite, ultra-luxury line that feels closer to a quiet coastal hotel than a cruise ship. It earns a place here on feel and on water: the ships are calm, grown-up, and unusually pool-rich for their size, which is exactly the lens this directory reads a ship through.
Every guest gets a suite, and every suite gets an ocean-facing terrace — the private stretch of outdoor water view that most lines reserve for their top cabins is the baseline here. The fare runs close to all-inclusive in the ways that matter: dining across the restaurants, most drinks, WiFi, and gratuities are folded in, so the days are less about tallying extras and more about settling in. Explora I launched the line, Explora II followed, and more of the fleet is on the way. Geographically the ships work the Mediterranean out of Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia) through the warmer months, cross to the Caribbean from Miami and San Juan for winter, and add Northern Europe sailings at the height of summer.
The water is where it fits the thesis cleanly. Rather than stake everything on one headline pool, the ships spread several across the decks — including an indoor pool under a retractable glass roof, the kind of sheltered, all-weather swim that stays usable when the top deck turns breezy or the itinerary heads north. The mood around the water skews adult by default: no waterslides, no splash zones, no contest for a lounger against a kids’-club crowd. For a slow, grown-up day in the water, it delivers.
One honest caveat: Explora is not an adults-only line. There’s no 18-plus rule, so children can be aboard — the ship simply isn’t built to court families, and in practice it reads calm and adult. If you want a hard guarantee of no kids, Virgin Voyages is the cleaner call. If you want ultra-luxury, all-suite, and pool-forward with a genuinely grown-up atmosphere, Explora is one of the strongest fits in this section.
