Devossion by Live Aqua Playa del Carmen

Devossion by Live Aqua is the launch property for a new adults-only brand from Posadas, the Mexican group behind Live Aqua — a conversion of the former Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen, relaunched under the new name in 2025. It sits directly on the beach and a short walk from Fifth Avenue, which is the trade the whole property is built around: you get an all-inclusive resort without giving up a town to walk into. That combination is rarer on this coast than it sounds, and it’s the strongest thing about the place.

The swim-up suites, and the ladder

The swim-up suites are the category people book this resort for, and they’re worth being precise about. The water does come right up to the terrace — this is a real swim-up, not a few-steps-across-the-grass arrangement.

What’s different is how you get in. You enter by a submerged ladder rather than walk-in steps. That sounds small and isn’t. The appeal of a swim-up suite is stepping off your terrace into the water without thinking about it — coffee in hand, before anyone else is out. A ladder puts a deliberate movement in the middle of that, and it changes the ritual. Look hard at the room photos before you book so you know what you’re getting.

The other thing to know is that the lane is shared. The resort’s own booking page describes the water as semi-private, which is the honest word for it: neighboring suites step into the same channel and swim past your terrace. That’s social and it suits a lot of people. It is not a private cocoon, and nobody at the property is pretending otherwise. If water nobody else can enter is the point, ask about the oceanfront Elixir Suites and their private plunge pools instead.

The rest of the property

Three infinity pools anchor the grounds, and the spa is built around a cenote. Dining runs to eight restaurants and four bars with chef-led events and cooking classes included in the rate, plus a speakeasy that takes some finding. The scale is moderate by Riviera Maya standards, which keeps it from feeling like a convention center with a beach attached. Who’s actually here

The marketing tells you plainly who this is for, and it’s worth listening to. Posadas built the brand for what it calls “socially driven” travelers, the property’s own photography is openly and visibly LGBTQ-friendly, and the pool deck at night is a genuine party — the whole deck lit, a DJ, a crowd. Few properties on this coast commit to that as clearly, and if it’s the week you want, that clarity is a feature.

It also means the quiet-adults-only assumption doesn’t hold here. If you pictured a hushed resort where the loudest thing is the surf, this is the wrong booking — and the resort’s own photos will tell you so before anyone else does.

Who it’s for

Come for a social, design-forward property with a walkable town at the door, and book it if the scene is the point. Think harder if the step-off-the-terrace ritual is the entire reason you’re booking a swim-up — the ladder is a real compromise, and there are resorts up the coast that don’t ask you to make it.
