Excellence El Carmen earns its directory spot on the sheer count of ways to put water outside your door: twenty-three pools threaded through the grounds, plus swim-up, private-pool, and rooftop-plunge-pool suite categories under one roof. It’s an adults-only all-inclusive, so the kid-free calculus is settled before you book.

The entry point into water-in-the-room is the Junior Swim-Up Suite — a ground-floor patio that steps straight into a shared channel pool running between the buildings, with its own swan-neck spa jet on the lip. There are 56 of these, which is a lot of swim-up inventory for one property. Above them, the Junior Suite with Private Pool trades the shared channel for your own contained pool, and the headline category is the Two-Story Rooftop Terrace Suite with Plunge Pool — an upstairs terrace with a private plunge pool and outdoor shower, of which only thirteen exist in the standard tier. Be honest with yourself about which water you actually want: the swim-up suites give you the social, swim-out experience, while the private-pool and rooftop categories give you water nobody else touches. They are not the same vacation, and the price gap is real.

Layered over all of it is the Excellence Club, the resort-within-a-resort tier that adds a private pool and beach area, upgraded in-suite service, and the members-only Magna restaurant. Most of the suite categories above come in both standard and Excellence Club versions, so the Club is a parallel upgrade rather than a separate building — worth pricing out if the private lounge and beach matter to you.

The property sits on the Uvero Alto stretch of coast, north of the busier Bávaro corridor, roughly 40 to 50 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ); the resort runs a paid airport shuttle, available around the clock. It’s a big resort — 492 suites across some twenty configurations — so set expectations for scale rather than intimacy. The flip side of that scale is the dining: a dozen-plus venues including Agave for Mexican, Chez Isabelle for French, Spice for pan-Asian with a teppanyaki room, Basmati for Indian, Oregano for Italian, The Grill, and The Lobster House, plus the Las Olas beach grill and a late-night food-truck concept. The Miilé Spa hydrotherapy circuit rounds out the daily-life amenities.

The caveats candid reviews repeat are mostly the consequences of size and location. Uvero Alto is genuinely remote — the upside is calm, palm-shaded beach with little vendor traffic; the downside is you’re a long, paid transfer from the airport and from anything off-property. The footprint is large enough that walking across it takes real time, and the most water-forward suites command a meaningful premium over the entry rooms. None of that is a flaw so much as the trade you’re making.

Come here if you want one Excellence Collection property with the broadest water-forward menu — swim-up, private pool, and rooftop plunge pool all available — and you’d rather choose your category deliberately than settle for whatever’s left. If you want a small, intimate resort or a short airport hop, this stretch of coast isn’t built for that.
