Excellence Playa Mujeres
A 450-suite adults-only all-inclusive on a calm-water beach 25 minutes north of Cancún, with swim-up suites, rooftop terrace suites with private plunge pools, seven pools, and a lazy river.
Excellence Playa Mujeres is the most established adults-only entry in the Playa Mujeres enclave — the property that paired swim-up suites with genuinely calm Caribbean water here before the neighborhood filled in around it. That pairing, at this scale, is the case for the directory spot. The newer Excellence Coral sits on the same beach next door; this is the original.
The property runs 450 suites, and the swim-forward categories are where it earns its place. The Junior Swim-Up Suites are the honest entry to water-in-the-room: a roughly 807-square-foot suite whose patio steps directly into a shared channel-style pool that runs past the ground-floor blocks — swim-out access, not a private pool, so you share the water with the suites alongside you. For your own water, the Terrace Suites with Plunge Pool add a private rooftop plunge pool, and the two-story Imperial Suites go furthest, pairing a rooftop terrace and private plunge pool across about 2,560 square feet. Be deliberate about which one you book, because the difference between shared swim-up channel and private rooftop plunge is the whole experience.
Seven pools — four heated in winter — and a lazy river thread through more than 56,000 square feet of water, with the main pool fronting the beach and quieter pools tucked between suite blocks. The beach is one of the bigger draws: Playa Mujeres’ geography shelters this stretch, so the water sits calmer and clearer, and the sargassum that plagues the Hotel Zone tends to land lighter here, with morning crews clearing the swim areas before most guests are out. The setting is a gated, low-density resort community with a 170-slip marina and the Greg Norman–designed Playa Mujeres Golf Club nearby — a quieter world than the Hotel Zone immediately to the south.
It sits on a calm-water Caribbean beach roughly 25 minutes north of Cancún International Airport; we book USA Transfers for the drive — the kind of stretch where the only foot traffic is between your suite and the water.
Dining is the property’s deep bench: ten-plus restaurants, none buffet-only at dinner. Chez Isabelle is the signature French room, Agave the standalone Mexican venue near the spa, The Lobster House sits above the main pool with a menu built entirely around lobster, and Basmati (North Indian), Spice (pan-Asian), Oregano (Italian), and The Grill (steakhouse) round out the range, alongside Las Olas and a Healthy Cuisine option. The Miilé Spa hydrotherapy circuit anchors the wellness side. The Excellence Club tier layers on butler service, a private lounge and pool, the Cielo Bali-bed lounge, and the members-only Magna restaurant if you want the upgraded package.
The caveats are the ones candid reviews repeat. It’s a large, spread-out property, so factor in real walking between your suite, the restaurants, and the beach — and a swim-up suite near the back of the channel is a hike from the sand. The hardware is well-kept but no longer new, and guests comparing it directly to the shinier Coral next door sometimes feel the age. And at this price point a vocal minority questions the value, which is a fair thing to weigh before booking.
Come for the original Playa Mujeres swim-up-suite-and-calm-water combination, the deep restaurant lineup, and a sheltered beach. Look elsewhere if you want the newest rooms on the strip, or if a long walk between your water and the sea would bother you more than the privacy is worth.
