Palafitos is Mexico’s only true overwater bungalow property — 30 suites suspended above the Caribbean at Maroma Beach, one of the more undisturbed stretches of Riviera Maya coastline. The official site calls these the first and only overwater bungalows in Mexico, and that’s the case for the directory spot: there is genuinely nowhere else on the Mexican Caribbean you can do this. The French Polynesia comparison gets made a lot, and it’s not wrong: stilts over turquoise water, direct ocean access from your deck, sunrise views unobstructed by anything except the horizon.

There are two categories, and the difference is mostly position. The Palafitos Overwater Bungalow is the standard suite — a private deck with an infinity plunge pool, an outdoor shower, loungers over the water, and a ladder straight down into the Caribbean. The Elite Palafitos Overwater Bungalow sits at the far end of the pier, where the views open up and the foot traffic past your deck drops away. Both have the same signature trick: glass floor panels set into the bungalow — at the entry, beside the bed, in the dining area, in the bathroom — so you can watch the water move under you. Set expectations on the marine life, though. Reviewers are consistent that you’ll see small fish through the glass, not a coral-reef ecosystem under your bed.

Each bungalow has its plunge pool on the deck and butler service, and the scale is deliberately small — 30 rooms total — which keeps the atmosphere closer to a private retreat than a resort complex. The property operates as the overwater wing of El Dorado Maroma, a Karisma Gourmet Inclusive resort, so you get the larger property’s beach and restaurants while the bungalow section functions as its own quiet world. Gourmet Inclusive here means à la carte, made-to-order dining with wine pairings rather than buffet lines. The standout is the Overwater Grill & Wine Bar, the bungalows’ own restaurant, with glass-floor dining rooms over the water; across El Dorado Maroma you can also work through Lima Limón for Peruvian, México Lindo for Mexican and Caribbean, and Papitos Gourmet Beach Club for the daytime menus on the sand.

A few honest caveats reviews repeat. The water under your ladder can be shallow at low tide, so check the depth and the current before you jump in — this is protected, calm Caribbean water, not a drop into deep open sea. And the glass floors are not one-way glass — if someone is in the water beneath your bungalow and looks up, they can see in, which matters in the shower and bath.
