Sandals Dunn's River

Sandals Dunn’s River has one of the densest lineups of water-in-the-room categories in the entire Sandals portfolio, organized around what the brand bills as the largest pool in Jamaica. That’s the case for the directory spot. As with every Sandals, this is couples-only — two adults traveling together — but the functional outcome is the same kid-free resort as any adults-only stay.

The property opened in May 2023 as Sandals’ 17th resort and newest Jamaica flagship: 260 suites in Mammee Bay, a few minutes west of Ocho Rios, next door to the Dunn’s River Falls it’s named for.

The reason to look hard at this resort is the sheer variety of ways to put water outside your door. The entry point is the Swim-Up One-Bedroom Butler Suite — a ground-floor patio that steps straight into a shared swim-up pool. Within that tier, the Tufa Swim-Up Suites are widely flagged as the best value on property: same swim-out access without the top-tier price. Above those, the Tufa Terrace SkyPool Butler Suites are a Jamaica first — each has its own private glass-panel infinity-edge plunge pool cantilevered along the balcony, the water hanging over the edge of the building behind a clear glass wall. The Coyaba Villa Swim-Up Rondoval Butler Suites go further still: standalone circular thatched cottages with a private plunge pool and direct swim-up access to the resort’s river pool, so you get both your own water and a step-off-the-deck channel into the bigger pool system. The Coyaba Sky Villa Swim-Up Rondovals add a rooftop terrace with a stargazing telescope and are commonly called the best rooms on property. For guests who’d rather be on the sand, Mammee Bay Beachfront Butler Suites put you at the water’s edge instead.

The resort organizes around a multi-level cascading river pool inspired by the Falls next door — five pools total, including two river pools, plus lobby waterfalls and cascading spa water features. The Coyaba Rondovals feed directly off that river pool, which is what makes the swim-up villa claim literal. Sandals markets it as the largest pool in Jamaica; treat that as the brand’s own claim rather than a verified fact, but the form is real regardless.

A few honest caveats before booking. The airport transfer is the most-repeated complaint by a wide margin — roughly 90 minutes from Montego Bay, which handles most international flights. If you can route through Ocho Rios airport the drive drops to 30 minutes, but most guests make the long haul. The resort is also stairs-heavy, built into a hillside, and not particularly ADA-friendly — ask specifically about room placement if mobility matters. The beach is short and split by rocks, pleasant but not a long sweep of sand, and the good loungers go early.

Dining is regularly called among the best in the Sandals portfolio — twelve concepts including an izakaya, Greek and Mediterranean, Italian, Latin, French, a coffee bar, Jamaica’s largest rum selection, and a rooftop sunset bar. The breadth is not in dispute; a minority of guests find the execution merely good rather than exceptional.

Come for the richest water-in-the-room lineup Sandals builds. Make your peace with the Montego Bay transfer and the hill. Choose your category by which water you want closest — swim-up suite, SkyPool plunge pool, or swim-up Rondoval — and book it deliberately.
