Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas

Anantara Mai Khao is in the directory because it is the flat one. Eighty-three standalone pool villas sit around a Bill Bensley-designed lagoon on level ground fifteen minutes from the runway, which makes it the rare Phuket pool villa you reach without climbing a headland or surrendering to a buggy timetable. Worth saying plainly before anything else: this is not an adults-only resort. It takes families, and The Turtle Club occupies its own building in a separate wing with its own lobby and its own pool — but children are not confined to it, and they swim in the main pool and eat in the restaurants like everyone else. What adults get here instead of an adult zone is the pool outside their own villa, and two bars, Vayu and Bua Bar, that the resort designates adults-only from five in the evening.

The second thing to settle is what you are actually booking, because the range is wide. The property runs to 183 units and only 113 of them have a pool. The Pool Villa is the entry point to the villa product at 186 square meters with a 34-square-meter private pool, and the Lagoon Pool Villa is the same footprint on the water’s edge. The Sala Pool Villa adds a wooden walkway to a curtained pavilion built out over the lagoon — freshwater and landscaped, not the sea, and worth being precise about since the photographs invite the wrong conclusion. The Lotus Villa is the one The White Lotus used as Belinda’s villa in season three, capped at two adults. Above those the two-, three- and four-bedroom pavilions scale up, and a single Two Bedroom Royal Villa by Jim Thompson sits steps from the sand with a 67-square-meter pool. Then there are the seventy Mai Khao Suites, from around $228, and these are apartment-style rooms in corridor buildings in the South Wing with no pool at all. They are perfectly good rooms. They are not what most people picture when they book this resort, and booking one by accident is the likeliest way to arrive disappointed.

Communally there is a genuine infinity pool along the beach with a swim-up bar, ankle-deep shallows and sunbeds on platforms above the water, plus a second pool over in the South Wing. The lagoon itself is the property’s signature — lotus blooms, torch-lined bridges, and a spa with six couples’ suites set around the water.

The beach needs honesty. Mai Khao runs about eleven kilometers and sits inside Sirinat National Park, which is why it is gloriously empty and also why there is nothing on it: no vendors, no jet skis, and no loungers, because it is protected turtle-nesting habitat. The resort’s sunbeds are on a terrace by the pool instead. More importantly, this is an open Andaman west-coast beach, and from May to October the surf and rip currents make it genuinely unsafe to swim — there have been drownings. From November to February it is lovely. The rest of the year, treat it as a walking and sunset beach and swim in your villa.

Two further things to know. A phased refurbishment of the South Wing buildings runs until early November 2026, taking La Sala out from the first of September to the middle of October; the villas are untouched. And the resort is remote — a small shopping village and a convenience store are the walkable options, with Patong about forty-five minutes away.

Dining is unusually deep for the size, from a beachfront grill with a salt sommelier to a twenty-seat omakase treehouse over the lagoon. Come for a private pool on flat ground a quarter of an hour from the plane. Book a villa, not a suite, and go in high season if you want the sea as well.
