Book a villa resort in Phuket or Koh Samui and you will almost certainly get your own pool. Not a plunge tub, not a shared channel — an actual private pool, on your own terrace, at a price that would buy you a nice room with a shower in the Caribbean.

So the interesting question on these two islands isn’t whether you get a pool. It’s what you’re trading for it. And the answer, on most of the best properties, is stairs: Thailand’s villa resorts are largely built into slopes, because a slope is what produces the view you’re paying for. That’s a good trade for a lot of people and a bad one for others, and it almost never appears in the listing. Two properties here deliberately don’t do it, and they’re flagged as such.

Phuket

Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas — the flat one

Eighty-three standalone pool villas on level ground around a Bill Bensley-designed lagoon, fifteen minutes from the runway — the rare Phuket pool villa you reach without climbing a headland or surrendering to a buggy. If you’re traveling with anyone whose knees have opinions, this is the answer on this island, and on Phuket it’s the whole shortlist.

One piece of timing to know: a phased refurbishment of the South Wing runs until early November 2026, taking the La Sala restaurant out from the first of September to the middle of October. The villas themselves are untouched.

The Pavilions Phuket — the one with pools you can actually swim in

Book this if the pool itself is the event. Eight of its ten room categories come with a private pool, and four of those are proper infinity pools pointed at the Andaman — twelve meters in some categories, fourteen in others — not plunge pools with an infinity edge, actual swimming pools. There’s a sixty-meter saltwater pool at the foot of the property as well.

The Tropical Pool Villa is the same footprint with the pool turned inland toward the hillside greenery, and it’s the cheaper way into the infinity-edge product. It’s a hilltop property above Layan Beach, so the view is the reason and the elevation is the price.

The Shore at Katathani — ninety-eight for ninety-eight

The volume play on the same idea: ninety-eight villas, and every single one has a private pool. Sea-view categories angle west at the Andaman, and there’s a main infinity pool above the sand at Kata Noi. If you simply want the odds in your favor that your villa has a pool, nothing here beats a hundred percent.

It’s terraced into the hillside above Kata Noi Beach, and its own page is candid that the hill is the defining physical fact of a stay — worth taking seriously rather than discovering on arrival.

Koh Samui

Four Seasons Koh Samui — the best version of the format

The top of this list and the most committed to the idea: seventy standalone villas, every one with its own private infinity pool angled at the Gulf of Thailand and the Five Islands, on the island’s secluded northwest tip.

The beach is a small private cove at the base of the hillside — calm, sheltered, and free of the vendor traffic that dominates Chaweng and Lamai on the other side of the island. It’s the one genuinely dependable stretch of sea on this page. You pay for that in elevation: the villas terrace down a steep jungle hillside, and the buggy is not optional.

SALA Samui Choengmon — the walkable one

Fifty-three of sixty-nine units have their own pool, on flat ground ten minutes from Samui airport, low-rise with no buggy dependence at all — a real contrast with the island’s hillside resorts. It isn’t step-free; small flights of steps run between the villas. But you are not being driven to dinner.

Worth knowing for couples: there’s no kids’ club and no children’s programming, and one of the two communal pools is adults-only — dark-tiled, long enough to swim lengths in, edged by a lotus pond and shaded by palms. Children of all ages are welcome, so this isn’t an adults-only resort and this page won’t call it one, but in practice a lot of couples find it reads like one.

Explorar Koh Samui — adults-only, and the cheapest way in

A hard sixteen and over, no exceptions — and it’s a brand standard rather than a property preference, which is the difference between a policy and a vibe. It’s the only unambiguously adults-only resort in this set.

Thirteen Beachfront Pool Villas at ninety-two square meters put the sand a few steps off your terrace with Koh Phangan across the water, and there’s a fifty-meter infinity pool with a swim-up bar. Its real trick is at the other end of the price list: a private plunge pool is available from close to the cheapest room on the property, which makes this the least expensive way onto this page.

The sea is the conditional part

This is the argument for the pool, and it’s the section I’d read closely.

On Phuket’s open Andaman west coast, from May to October the surf and rip currents make swimming genuinely unsafe. Not choppy — unsafe; there have been drownings. From November to February it’s lovely. That’s a five-month window each year where the sea in front of your resort is scenery, and the pool on your terrace is the only water you’re actually getting into.

Koh Samui’s problem is gentler but real. At SALA Samui Choengmon the beach is calm and genuinely pretty, but shallow and tide-dependent — at low water the sea retreats a long way out, there are rocks and tide pools at the eastern end, and levels run lowest from May to October. At Explorar, guests have described the beach directly in front of the resort as eroded by storms, with sandbags and a drop from the steps down to the water, while a stay this April called it beautiful. I can’t resolve that from here, and I’d rather say so than pick whichever version suits the page.

Four Seasons’ private cove is the exception on both islands — small, sheltered, and yours.

None of this makes these bad beach destinations. It makes them places where the private pool is the reliable water and the sea is the bonus, which is the reverse of how the photographs read.

So which one?

If mobility is what matters most — no headland to climb, no buggy required — it’s Anantara Mai Khao on Phuket (flat ground, zero stairs) or SALA Samui Choengmon on Samui (walkable, just a few short flights between the villas). If you want a pool you can genuinely swim laps in, not just sit in, it’s The Pavilions Phuket, where the top room categories get a twelve- or fourteen-meter infinity pool depending on which you book. For the best version of the format, elevation included, it’s Four Seasons Koh Samui. For a genuinely adults-only resort and the cheapest way into a private pool, it’s Explorar.
