Anantara Veli Maldives Resort

Anantara Veli is in the Jet & Swim directory because it is one of the rare Maldives properties where adults-only isn’t a wing or a floor category — it’s the entire island. We haven’t stayed here personally; the inclusion is an editorial call based on the overwater-first room design, the consistently excellent reviews, and the recent full property refresh. The minimum age is 18.

Anantara Veli sits on its own private island in the South Malé Atoll, about 30 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport — close enough to be accessible, far enough to feel genuinely removed. The island is compact at roughly 250 by 200 meters, with 67 villas and no families in sight.

The recent renovation rebuilt the property from the inside out: new villas, new dining concepts, a new spa, and a new wellness program. Every villa category is overwater or ocean-facing — even the entry-level rooms are suspended above the lagoon. The villa ladder runs from Over Water Villa (66 sqm, sundeck with daybed) up through Superior and Deluxe Over Water options, then into pool categories: the Deluxe Over Water Pool Villa adds a plunge pool directly off the bedroom, while the Ocean Pool Villa trades the over-water position for a cliff-edge perch with panoramic views. The Beach Pool Villa is the largest on property at 145 sqm with direct beach access. Pool villa categories include a villa host.

The dining setup is one of the more generous in this price range. On-island you have 73 Degrees for buffet breakfast and themed dinners, Baan Huraa for Thai over the lagoon, Origami for teppanyaki and sushi, and the Dhoni Bar for poolside food and drinks through midnight. Guests also have dine-around access to sister property Anantara Dhigu next door — including the overwater grill Sea.Fire.Salt — reached by a five-minute boat ride. That puts you at seven-plus restaurants without leaving the resort ecosystem. Baan Huraa and Sea.Fire.Salt are the consistent standouts across reviews.

The house reef is accessible from the lagoon edge, though it requires swimming out past the shallow area near shore rather than stepping off your villa deck. The Aquafanatics PADI dive center runs trips to more than 20 nearby reefs and offers certification from beginner through advanced nitrox and rescue levels. Water sports run the full range: jet skis, kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, and a surf school with dedicated wave access. The Spice Spoons cooking class is a worthwhile half-day if you’re staying long enough to slow down.

The Sundari Ayurvedic Spa has five overwater treatment rooms with a resident Ayurvedic doctor on property. The main pool is a beachfront infinity edge. Daily yoga and meditation sessions are included in the rate, which is uncommon at this price tier.

Transfer logistics: speedboat service connects Velana International Airport to the resort throughout the day. The 30-minute ride is part of the arrival experience, not an inconvenience.
