The Best Overwater Pool Villas in the Maldives (2026)

Everyone books the Maldives off the same photograph: a villa on stilts, a ladder down into water so clear it looks retouched. What the photograph rarely shows is the thing that actually decides your week — whether there’s a pool on that deck.

Because “overwater” and “overwater with a pool” are not the same booking, and the gap between them is where people get caught out. I’ve written before about what nobody tells you about overwater bungalows, and the shortest piece of advice in it was get a private pool, full stop. This is the list that answers which ones.

First: overwater does not mean pool

“Overwater” describes where the villa sits. That’s all it describes. It says nothing about what’s on the deck.

There are beautiful overwater villas in the Maldives — at genuinely excellent resorts — where the deck holds two loungers and a ladder into the lagoon and that is the entire water offering. That’s not a bait and switch; it’s the classic Maldives villa, and for some people it’s perfect. But if you’re picturing sliding into your own water at seven in the morning without seeing another human, you have to book that specifically. The word to look for is in the villa name: Ocean Pool Villa, Aqua Suite, Lagoon Pool Villa. If the category name doesn’t say pool, assume there isn’t one.

The islands where every villa has a pool

This is the cleanest way to buy the Maldives, because it removes the decision entirely.

Kagi Maldives Spa Island — all fifty villas, and a speedboat option

Overwater pool villa at Kagi Maldives Spa Island, with a private pool on the deck above the lagoon

Picture the version of a vacation where the agenda disappears entirely: sink into your own plunge pool with the lagoon a few feet below, wander over to the 1,500-square-meter Baani Spa before lunch, then snorkel the house reef right off the beach — no boat, no schedule, no one else in the water.

All fifty villas have a private pool — an actual pool, not a jacuzzi or a plunge tub — across three categories at 105 square meters each. The Lagoon Pool Villa rises straight out of the water with a ladder down off the terrace, the Ocean Pool Villa faces open sea, and the Beach Pool Villa puts your pool behind a private stretch of sand.

Getting there is unusually flexible: fifteen minutes by seaplane, or roughly an hour by speedboat if you’d rather skip the floatplane timetable. North Malé is close enough that the boat is a real option rather than a consolation prize.

Two honest notes. Kagi calls itself adults-only but sets the minimum age at 12, not 16 or 18 — there’s no kids’ club and children are genuinely rare on a fifty-villa island, but they aren’t prohibited, and guests expecting a strictly adult island have said in reviews they felt let down. And the overwater ladder into the lagoon is steep metal; guests with limited mobility have flagged it as a real problem rather than a minor inconvenience. The Beach Pool Villas solve that — lagoon a few steps away, same pool.

Sun Siyam Iru Veli — the same idea at three times the scale

Villa with a private pool at Sun Siyam Iru Veli in Dhaalu Atoll

Slide open the glass floor panel in an Ocean Villa and the lagoon is right there under your feet — that’s the moment this island gets booked for. But it’s not the water reviewers can’t stop mentioning. It’s the butler who’s learned how you take your coffee by day two, the kind of attentive that quietly turns a nice stay into the one you describe to people for months afterward.

125 villas in Dhaalu Atoll, beach and overwater alike, every single one with its own pool — the better pick if a fifty-villa island sounds small to you. It carries close to a 4.9 out of 5 on TripAdvisor across several thousand reviews. It isn’t adults-only, about forty minutes by seaplane from Malé.

Where the pool is a category you book on purpose

At these four, going overwater doesn’t get you a pool — booking the right category does. That’s not a knock on any of them; it’s the normal Maldives, and it’s the single thing most worth getting right at checkout.

You & Me Maldives — fully adults-only, and an underwater restaurant

Aqua Suite at You & Me Maldives from above: a private pool set into the thatched villa deck, with steps down into the lagoon alongside

Adults-only, overwater-first, out in Raa Atoll about forty-five minutes by seaplane. The villa you want is the Aqua Suite, which is where the private pool lives — book that name, not just “overwater”.

It also has H2O, an underwater restaurant six meters below the surface: the kind of thing you do once and talk about for a decade.

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa — the Jet’s Pick

Overwater villa at Pullman Maldives Maamutaa, with a full private pool set into the deck and the lagoon beyond

A Jet’s Pick, and it earns that on every count — the private-pool villas high among them. The overwater villas sit right at the reef edge, and the all-inclusive is the real thing rather than the asterisk-riddled version: multiple restaurants, premium drinks, no quiet upcharges waiting at checkout. It delivers across the board instead of trading on one strong feature.

It’s family-friendly rather than adults-only, which is worth knowing before you book but isn’t a mark against it. The catch is the journey — see the transfer note below, because this one is a full travel day each way.

Anantara Veli — adults-only, and the easiest arrival in the Maldives

Overwater villa sundeck at Anantara Veli Maldives, with loungers above the lagoon in South Malé Atoll

What you’re actually buying here is an island built for two people and nothing else — every villa suspended over the lagoon, a five-minute boat ride to a second island’s worth of restaurants including the overwater grill Sea.Fire.Salt, five overwater treatment rooms at the Sundari spa with a resident Ayurvedic doctor, and daily yoga included in the rate. That last detail tells you the pace this island keeps.

The pool is a category here rather than a given, so book the name: the Over Water Pool Villa and the Deluxe Over Water Pool Villa (which adds an infinity pool and an overwater hammock) are the ones with water on the deck, and the Beach Pool Villa is the largest on the property at 145 square meters. The plain Over Water and Deluxe Over Water villas give you a sundeck and a ladder into the lagoon — lovely, but not a pool.

It’s also the easiest island in the Maldives to reach — 35 minutes by speedboat, no floatplane schedule to plan a trip around.

Hurawalhi — adults-only, on a private coral island

Overwater villa at Hurawalhi with a private infinity pool set into the deck above the lagoon

A private coral island in Lhaviyani Atoll, adults-only, about forty minutes by seaplane, and home to the world’s largest all-glass underwater restaurant. The 90 villas split into beach and overwater, each available with or without a private pool — so again, the word to book is in the category name. The Ocean Pool Villas are the overwater ones with a private infinity pool on the deck; the Beach Pool Villas and Beach Sunset Pool Villas do it from the sand.

The house reef does its own selling — turtles gliding past, reef sharks working the shallows, rays cutting past your own ladder — the kind of thing that talks people out of ever booking the boat excursion.

Despite 90 villas, the adults-only policy keeps it remarkably quiet — reviewers consistently note it feels half-full even at high occupancy.

The transfer changes your trip more than the villa does

This is the part I’d read twice.

Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only. If your international flight lands into Malé in the evening, you are not flying to your island that night — you’re paying for a hotel near the airport and losing a morning. Nobody tells you this at booking, and it’s why a short speedboat is worth more than it looks: a boat runs on your schedule.

The longer seaplane hops are worth it for the right island, but plan the arrival flight around them. And Pullman Maamutaa isn’t a seaplane trip at all — a domestic flight plus a speedboat is a full travel day each way, which is exactly why the water down there is as quiet as it is. Give it a week and the journey stops feeling like a cost. Book it for four nights and you’ll spend half of them in transit.

I’ve written up the seaplane versus domestic flight question in full.

So which one?

If you want the pool decision taken off the table entirely, it’s Kagi for a small spa island or Iru Veli for a bigger one. If you want a fully adult island and a pool, it’s the Aqua Suite at You & Me, the Ocean Pool Villa at Hurawalhi, or an Over Water Pool Villa at Anantara Veli. If the arrival day matters more than the deck — and on a short trip it should — Anantara Veli’s speedboat is the most underrated thing on this page. If you’re going for the underwater restaurant, Hurawalhi and You & Me are the two islands built around one. And if you want the pick I’d stand behind on the widest set of reasons — villa, reef, food, value — it’s Pullman Maamutaa, family island and all.

Whichever way you go, book the villa category on purpose. In the Maldives, more than anywhere, the room is the vacation.

Frequently asked

Which Maldives resorts have a private pool in every villa?
Kagi Maldives Spa Island and Sun Siyam Iru Veli both put a private pool in every single villa — all 50 at Kagi, all 125 at Iru Veli, beach and overwater categories alike. At most other Maldives resorts the pool is a specific villa category you have to book deliberately, not something that comes with going overwater.
Does an overwater villa in the Maldives come with a pool?
Not automatically. 'Overwater' describes where the villa sits, not what's on the deck. Plenty of overwater villas have a deck, a ladder into the lagoon and no pool at all — at Anantara Veli and Hurawalhi, for instance, the pool is a specific category rather than something every overwater villa has. If you want a pool, book a villa category with the word pool in its name: Anantara Veli's Over Water Pool Villa, Hurawalhi's Ocean Pool Villa, You & Me's Aqua Suite.
Is a seaplane or a speedboat better for a Maldives transfer?
It depends on the atoll, and it changes your trip more than most people expect. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late arrival into Malé can cost you a night near the airport. A speedboat runs on your schedule — which is why a resort like Anantara Veli, 35 minutes by speedboat in South Malé Atoll, is genuinely easier to reach than islands twice as far by air.
Which Maldives overwater resorts are actually adults-only?
You & Me Maldives, Anantara Veli and Hurawalhi are adults-only islands. Kagi markets itself as adults-only but sets its minimum age at 12 rather than 16 or 18. Pullman Maamutaa and Sun Siyam Iru Veli are family-friendly rather than adults-only — Pullman is a Jet's Pick for its private-pool villas, its reef-edge setting and an all-inclusive that covers multiple restaurants and premium drinks with no upcharges waiting at checkout.
