One lagoon, 158 meters end to end, threaded through a hotel of only 103 rooms — that is the case for the directory spot, and nothing in Bali is shaped quite like it. Worth noting first: this is not adults-only, with a kids’ club for four- to twelve-year-olds, a children’s pool and a playground. But the club is indoors on the fourth floor and the children’s pool sits in an interior corner, so families aren’t parked on the water you’d come for. That’s a floor plan, not a promise.

The room to book is the Impressive Lagoon Pool Suite, 61 square meters, where a glass wall opens onto a terrace with a nest daybed and a double lounger and the lagoon starts at the edge of the decking. A butler comes with the category, mostly reachable over WhatsApp, and the floating breakfast turns up in most accounts. The property calls the lagoon exclusive to these suites; handle that word carefully. The water may be reserved for a few rooms; the walkway and daybeds beside it are not, people stroll past, and Tree Bar diners can see into some terraces — the hotel has since planted along that path. Take the shared channel as the point rather than the compromise: it’s far more water than a plunge pool, and the accounts worth reading describe it empty for long stretches.

The trap sits one rung below. Wonderful Pool Access (57 square meters) reads like the affordable version of that and isn’t: it doesn’t reach the lagoon, and the property’s own page puts it beside the children’s pool. Book those two words on price and you land at the family end. The Wonderful Garden View and Impressive Nest Suite have balconies and no water. For a pool nobody walks past, it’s the Heavenly Pool Suite (122 square meters) or the Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite (108), each with a heated 22-square-meter private pool. There are no villas here; at Maya the private pool comes attached to a suite.

The building is worth a look: an angular, near-brutalist facade under a planted eco roof, opened in 2014, with contemporary Balinese art, a gallery on site and the Maya Art Lounge. It’s beachfront on Sanur’s reef-protected east coast, 30 to 40 minutes from Denpasar in traffic. Kuu, the Japanese izakaya, gets named among the best tables in Sanur, not just in the hotel; Mayasari does breakfast with live stations and floating gazebos, and Tree Bar is beachfront Mediterranean with a happy hour that draws non-guests. Yoga runs daily, sunset sessions on the roof, and the spa has six treatment rooms.

The honest notes cluster around sun and concrete. The buildings run east–west, and the general manager has acknowledged that the lagoon terraces fall into shadow for part of the year, so ask about your dates; the Infinity Beach Pool on the sand is where the light is, and it’s the one guests rave about anyway. Every pool here, lagoon included, is 1.2 meters — standing depth, not lap or diving depth. The beach is the weak link: small, no seating, none of the private stretch the neighbors have. Lagoon cleaning starts at 6:30 a.m., the price of a terrace that doubles as the pool edge. And the lobby is unconditioned concrete with little airflow, a recurring complaint.

Best for anyone who wants a swim-out suite in Bali without villa money, and for couples who’d rather have a long channel of water and a good izakaya than a resort estate. Look elsewhere if the beach day is the holiday, if you need an adults-only property, or if a meter and change of water won’t do. Book the Impressive Lagoon Pool Suite by its full name and you get 158 meters of swimming that starts where your deck ends.
