The Best Swim-Up Rooms in Bali (2026)

Bali has a water problem that nobody mentions in the brochure. The island’s most spectacular rooms sit on clifftops above the Indian Ocean or terraced into a river gorge, and the water in all of those photographs is water you look at. You can’t swim in a view.

So swim-up in Bali works differently than it does in Mexico. There’s no coast-long run of resorts with channels off every terrace. Instead a small number of properties on the calm side of the island build a lagoon — a swimmable body of water threading through the resort — and put ground-floor rooms along it. Step off your patio, and you’re in it.

Three resorts do that properly, and they happen to sit at three completely different prices, which makes this an unusually easy list to use.

Maya Sanur — the cheapest way onto a lagoon

A 158-meter lagoon runs the length of the resort, and the ground-floor Impressive Lagoon Pool Suites open straight onto it. The suite is 61 square meters; a glass wall slides back onto a terrace with a daybed, and the water starts where the deck ends — just over a meter deep, enough to swim, shallow enough to stand up in.

It’s a shared channel, and that’s the appeal rather than the compromise. A hundred and fifty-eight meters is a long way to swim, guests report long stretches with nobody else in the water, and it is a great deal more water than a plunge pool gives you. Book it knowing what it is, though: a walkway and daybeds run along the opposite side, so this is a channel through the resort rather than a private pool, and people will walk past your terrace. Butler service comes with the suite.

One booking trap to dodge: read the category names. The Wonderful Pool Access rooms open onto a different pool entirely, not the lagoon. Get the right one and you’re in Sanur, on the reef-protected east coast, a few steps from the beach, at a fraction of what the rungs above cost.

Andaz Bali — the one that does it best

Andaz moves you up a tier and across to Sanur on the reef-protected east coast, and the access is literal: slide the doors, cross the patio, swim — in at least one case all the way to the main pool. Three categories open onto the lagoon: the 1 King Bed Lagoon Access, its twin-bed twin, and the roomier Andaz Suite Lagoon Access. The channel serves seven or eight rooms, which in practice has meant a stretch of water with nobody else in it.

Two things to settle before you book. Only two rooms in the entire resort have a proper ocean view, so don’t book Lagoon Access picturing sea beyond the water. And the twenty-two villas are the alternative if you want a pool of your own — eighteen Garden Pool Villas and four Beach Pool Villas, each walled, and they interconnect, which is how the four-bedroom family bookings happen.

The St. Regis Bali — the only one that gives you both

The top of the ladder, back at Nusa Dua. The lagoon is 3,668 square meters of genuine sea water, open around the clock, and the One and Two Bedroom Lagoon Villas sit a few steps off it — with their own private pools as well. That combination is the reason to pay for it: everywhere else on this page, the lagoon is instead of a private pool rather than as well as one. There’s a butler in every room and a nightly champagne sabrage on the grand staircase, if that’s the register you’re booking in.

The category trap here is real and expensive. The entry-level St. Regis Suite and Ocean View Suite come with no water at all. If the pool is the point, start at the St. Regis Pool Suite or go straight to a villa — and note that breakfast and the complimentary airport transfer come only with the Pool Suite, the Grand Astor and the villas, not with a standard suite rate.

If you’d rather have the view than the swim

Bali’s villa properties are extraordinary, and they’re a genuinely different holiday: you’re trading swimmable sea for spectacle, and at this level the spectacle is worth the trade.

Alila Villas Uluwatu — the clifftop one

On the Bukit Peninsula cliffs about a hundred meters above the Indian Ocean. Every villa has its own pool, and a 50-meter clifftop infinity pool runs along the edge of the property. The sea is a view here, not a swim — the cliff sees to that.

Four Seasons Bali at Sayan — the one over the gorge

In the Ayung River valley near Ubud, with a two-tier infinity pool cantilevered over the jungle gorge, reached across a suspension bridge to a treetop lotus pond. Private-pool villas terrace down towards the river. It’s one of the great arrivals in Southeast Asia.

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve — the one down at the river

A few minutes away in the same valley: 25 freestanding pool villas stepped ten stories down the gorge to the Ayung, with private infinity-edge pools at the Riverfront category. Same valley as Sayan, lower down and quieter.

The beach behind the lagoon matters more than you think

A lagoon is reliable. The sea in front of it is not, and it varies enormously by coast.

Nusa Dua — where The St. Regis sits — is the best swimming beach on the island, and that’s not a small claim in Bali. An offshore reef flattens the swell, the seabed is sand rather than rock, and the sand slopes in gently. It swims at mid-to-high tide; at low tide the reef flat surfaces and the water gets too shallow, which is when you go back to the lagoon.

One caveat specific to The St. Regis: its own stretch is beautiful and not much of a swimming beach. The reef sits five hundred meters out so the water is calm, but the shelf stays shallow a long way and the bottom has stones and sea plants — guests report needing water shoes to walk out. Most people swim in the lagoon and walk on the sand, which works fine as long as nobody promised you otherwise.

Sanur — Maya and Andaz — is genuinely swimmable, which is rarer in Bali than the photographs suggest, but it swims on a schedule. The reef holds the water flat and the tide decides when there’s enough of it: two high tides a day, each sliding about fifty minutes later, and the rule is to swim within a couple of hours either side of one. Outside that window the sea pulls back over a flat shelf of seagrass and coral rubble.

And a point that decides January trips: both coasts face the wrong way to collect Bali’s wet-season plastic. The currents that make west-coast beaches unswimmable in the new year run past these shores rather than onto them, which is why a January stay on this side still looks broadly like the photographs.

None of these are adults-only

I’d rather say it plainly than let you find out at check-in.

Maya Sanur is a family resort — a kids’ club for four- to twelve-year-olds, a children’s pool and a playground, and it takes children of any age. Andaz has a kids’ club called Kemu Mai and a shallow children’s pool called Alit; the counterweight is Shanti, a quiet pool under heavy tree canopy with about ten loungers and rarely more than a couple of people in it. The St. Regis has a children’s club for four- to twelve-year-olds and a children’s pool, and no adults-only pool, bar or corner anywhere — the atmosphere is quiet and skews adult, but that’s who books it, not a space anyone set aside.

If a fully adult resort is the requirement, Bali isn’t currently the island for it.

So which one?

Least money onto a lagoon, and the longest stretch of water to swim — Maya Sanur, booked as the Impressive Lagoon Pool Suite. Best execution of the idea, and the roomier Sanur option — Andaz, booked as Lagoon Access on purpose. Lagoon and a private pool of your own — The St. Regis Lagoon Villas, the only place here you get both.

And if the view matters more than the swim, go up the cliff to Alila Uluwatu or inland to Four Seasons Sayan or Mandapa.

Whichever you pick, book the room category on purpose. In Bali more than most places, the difference between a room with water and a room with a view of water is a single line on the booking page.
