Pullman Maldives Maamutaa
Family-friendly — but reef-edge overwater villas and one of the Maldives' most generous all-inclusive programs earn it a Jet's Pick.
A week here in an overwater villa was one of the most magical and genuinely water-forward stays I’ve ever had — and it would be a disservice not to talk about it.
It sits on Maamutaa Island in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, far enough south that getting here means a domestic flight from Malé and then a speedboat transfer. That extra leg keeps the crowds thin and the surroundings quiet in a way the closer-in resorts can’t match.
The overwater villa is the kind of room you don’t want to leave. Steps from the deck straight down into the lagoon, a private pool, and water clear enough to see fish moving below before you’ve even put your mask on. The snorkeling straight off the villa is excellent — no boat trip, no excursion to arrange, just a few steps down and the reef is right there. More rare and endangered species here than anywhere else I’ve snorkeled.
Pullman runs one of the more robust all-inclusive programs in the Maldives: multiple restaurants included, premium drinks, no nickel-and-diming. The chef got to know us over the week and served personalized dishes — we were even given a tour of the back kitchen. On an island where leaving for dinner isn’t an option, that kind of attention matters.
If you’ve been weighing the headline Maldives names — Soneva, Cheval Blanc, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi — and balking at the per-night cost, this is the property worth knowing about: a genuine overwater-Maldives experience, with an all-inclusive that actually delivers, at a meaningfully lower price. It rewards snorkelers and divers most of all, and anyone happy to trade a quick seaplane hop for a quieter, far-less-trafficked corner of the country. The one honest caveat is the journey — Maamutaa sits far enough south that it’s a full travel day in each direction, not a long-weekend trip. But give it a week and that distance stops feeling like a cost. It’s the whole reason the water out your door is as clear, as quiet, and as alive as it is.
