SALA Samui Choengmon Beach Resort

Fifty-three of the sixty-nine units at SALA Samui Choengmon come with their own private pool, which is the case for the directory spot, and the adults-only beachfront pool is what makes it more than a numbers game. On the crowd policy, the honest version happens to be the flattering one: children of all ages are welcome here, so it isn’t adults-only — but there is no kids’ club, no children’s programming, and one of the two communal pools is set aside for adults. If you have been burned by resorts that market seclusion and deliver a water slide, this is the opposite arrangement.

The pool villas are the product. The Garden Pool Villa is the entry point at around a hundred square meters, set among the fronds with its own pool and walled for privacy. The SALA Pool Villa is the volume category and the one most people mean when they picture this resort — a hundred-odd square meters, private pool and sun deck, and an outdoor bathroom with a freestanding tub open to the sky, which is a signature here rather than a novelty. Above those, the One Bedroom Pool Villa Suite and the two-story One Bedroom Duplex Pool Villa Suite stretch the same idea, the Two Bedroom Pool Villa Suite and the interconnecting configurations handle groups, and the single SALA Signature Villa One sits at the top at over three hundred square meters. The sixteen Deluxe Balcony rooms are the exception — no private pool, and the one category to avoid if the pool is why you came. Floating breakfast is delivered to your own water on request.

Communally there are two pools, both a few steps from the sand. The adults-only one is the reason to pay attention: dark-tiled, long enough to actually swim lengths in, edged by a lotus pond and shaded by palms, with tanning beds around it. Guests name it unprompted in reviews. The family pool sits separately beside the restaurant, which is a sensible piece of planning — parents can watch from lunch, and everyone else is somewhere else entirely.

The beach needs care. Choeng Mon is a sheltered crescent of about a kilometer with a soft, gradual bottom, and the resort has eighty meters of it. It is calm and it is genuinely pretty, but it is shallow and tide-dependent — at low water the sea retreats a long way out, there are rocks and tide pools at the eastern end, and the levels run lowest from May to October. It also faces east, so this is a sunrise beach and not a sunset one, which is worth knowing if you have read about Samui’s western sunsets. The consolation is sitting in your own pool.

The layout is low-rise and walkable, with no buggy dependence at all — a real contrast with the island’s hillside resorts — though it is not step-free, and small flights of steps run between the villas. The airport is about ten minutes away, Fisherman’s Village and Chaweng about fifteen, and Choeng Mon village is a two-minute walk, which matters because there is only one restaurant on site plus the beach bar. On a long stay that would be thin; with the village at the gate it isn’t. The kitchen holds up its end, and the property has taken two Michelin Keys and kept them.

One practical note: there is a sister property, SALA Samui Chaweng, on a different beach. It is the one with the kids’ club. Booking the wrong SALA is an easy mistake and an annoying one.

Come for a private pool at nearly every price point and a dark, quiet, adults-only pool a few steps from the sand. Check the tide table before you plan a swim in the sea.
