The Pavilions Phuket

Eight of the ten room categories at The Pavilions Phuket come with a private pool, four of them proper infinity pools pointed at the Andaman — twelve meters in some categories, fourteen in others — that is the case for the directory spot, and the hilltop position that makes those views possible is the same reason the beach is a shuttle ride rather than a walk. One thing to settle early: this is not an adults-only resort. Every pool villa is twelve-and-over, ALTO and the 360 Bar are sixteen-plus, and children under twelve are accepted only in the Suites Wing. There is no kids’ club and no family programming — the property simply isn’t built that way.

The water is villa-side, and it is the reason to come. The Ocean View Pool Villa is the category the resort is built around: 310 square meters with a private twelve-by-four-meter infinity pool, an outdoor sala, and a deck angled so the sunset lands in your own water. The Tropical Pool Villa is the same footprint and the same pool turned inland toward the hillside greenery, and it is the cheaper way into the infinity-edge product. Above those, the Three Bedroom Pool Villa and Four Bedroom Pool Villa stretch to 595 square meters over two stories with fourteen-by-four-meter pools. The Spa & Pool Pavilion and the duplex Spa & Pool Penthouse trade the infinity edge for a ten-by-three-and-a-half-meter pool plus something more unusual — a private couples’ spa room with its own steam room, and a rate that includes a daily sixty-minute massage for two. The two categories without a pool are the Tropical View Suite and the Garden Suite. If the pool is the point, don’t book those.

Communally there are two more. A sixty-meter free-form saltwater pool sits at Firefly, finished in turquoise with a sand-wash entry that slopes in like a beach and lights up after dark, and a thirty-meter lap pool sits up at the spa for anyone who swims actual lengths. Floating breakfast is available in the pool categories by advance reservation.

Then the thing that shapes the whole stay. This is a hilltop resort and the beach is not at the bottom of the stairs — Layan is a complimentary scheduled shuttle away, walkable in about half an hour if you’re determined and sensible by car otherwise. The terrain is steep enough that buggy service isn’t a convenience but the way you get around, and anyone with mobility limits should weigh that seriously. What the elevation buys is the view, and the trade is a fair one, but it ought to be a decision rather than a surprise on arrival. The resort sits above Cherngtalay on the northwest coast, twenty to thirty minutes from the airport, with Boat Avenue and the Laguna area the nearest option for eating off property.

On property there are two restaurants and one very good bar. ALTO is the Italian one, twinned with ALTO Roma — the team behind the Michelin-starred Acquolina built the menu and trained the kitchen — and it opens Tuesday to Saturday only, which is a real constraint across a full week. Firefly runs all day off a wood-fired grill and an open show kitchen, breakfast through dinner. The 360 Bar occupies the highest point of the property and does exactly what the name promises at sunset; the half-price hour between half past seven and half past eight is worth building an evening around.
