Worth the Flight

What Nobody Tells You About Overwater Bungalows

The photos don’t lie — an overwater bungalow in the Maldives is exactly as beautiful as it looks. But there are a few things worth knowing before you go that most travel writing glosses over.

Getting there is its own trip

You fly into Malé first — and if you arrive in the afternoon, you may find that same-day connections to your resort aren’t possible, which means an overnight in the city before continuing on. I stayed in Malé one night on my first trip. It wasn’t what I was there for, and if your entire focus is getting to the water, it’s a night that feels out of place. Arrive early in the day and you can connect directly to your resort — by speedboat or seaplane — without the overnight. It’s worth building your flights around this detail before you book anything else.

The seaplane vs. speedboat question

How you reach your resort depends on which atoll it’s on. My first trip was a long flight on Maldivian Airlines followed by a speedboat transfer — perfectly fine, and the speedboat ride across the lagoon is beautiful in its own right. But the seaplane is on my list for the next trip. Landing on the water and stepping off directly into the Maldives is the kind of arrival that sets the tone for everything that follows. If your resort offers seaplane access, it’s worth factoring into your decision.

Get a private pool — full stop

If water is the whole point of this trip, don’t book an overwater bungalow without a private pool. I spent a significant amount of time in mine and it elevated the experience in a way that’s hard to overstate. The lagoon is stunning, but having your own pool off the deck means you’re in the water constantly — morning, afternoon, whenever. It’s the difference between an overwater bungalow and an overwater experience.

The floating meal is worth doing once

Many resorts offer a floating breakfast or floating tapas served directly in your private pool — a tray set adrift while you’re in the water. It sounds like a gimmick until you’re doing it. Pullman Maldives Maamutaa offers this as part of the villa experience. Confirm with your resort before you arrive — it’s not universal, and it’s worth requesting ahead of time.

Your bungalow may be a long walk from everything

Overwater bungalows are often positioned at the far end of long boardwalks, which is part of the appeal — privacy, quiet, the feeling of being out over open water. But it also means a genuine walk to dinner, to the bar, to the main pool. Resorts handle this well — golf carts are usually available on request, and some properties offer bikes. Both work. Just know that after a long dinner and a couple of cocktails, the boardwalk back to your bungalow requires more attention than you’d think. The golf cart drivers will tell you they’ve seen people go off the edge. They’re not joking.

When to go — and when to book

The dry season runs from December through April, bringing clear skies, calm seas, and the most reliable weather for an overwater stay. February and March are the driest months and the sweet spot if you want the best chance of uninterrupted sunshine. That said, Christmas and New Year weeks can run significantly higher than standard peak rates — worth knowing before you lock in dates.

The wet season runs May through November, with rain typically falling for an hour or two in the afternoon before clearing. Overwater villas can run meaningfully less during these months, and the experience is still genuinely beautiful — just less predictable. September is the wettest month and the one to avoid if sun is your priority.

For booking lead time: popular overwater villas sell out fastest — book 4–6 months ahead for peak season and 6–9 months out for Christmas and New Year. This is a trip that rewards planning early.

The experience is unlike anything else

Waking up above the Indian Ocean, stepping off your deck into warm water, watching the light change over the lagoon from your private pool — it earns every superlative. Just go in knowing the logistics, book the private pool, and request the floating breakfast. The rest takes care of itself.
