Worth the Flight
Sargassum Season in Mexico? Book the Swim-Up Room, Not the Beach
Picture the morning. It’s just past seven, the resort is still half-asleep, and you slide open your door to a pool that begins right at your feet — warm, glass-still, gold light lying flat across the water. You step off the terrace, coffee or a mimosa in hand, and the day starts in the water before it starts anywhere else. No elevator, no hunt for a lounger, no walk to the beach. Just you and the quiet and the swim.
That’s a swim-up room. And it’s the whole reason a Mexico trip can be gorgeous this summer no matter what you’ve been reading about the beach.
The morning that doesn’t depend on the sand
Because a lot of people are asking about the beach right now. Sargassum — the seaweed that drifts onto the Mexican Caribbean in the warm months — is having a big season, and it’s fair to wonder. Here’s the lovely part: everything in that first paragraph is completely untouched by it. The swim-up pool is your waterfront, it’s crystal and warm and cleaned before you’re even awake, and it’s the water you’ll actually spend your hours in.
I book a swim-up suite at Barceló Maya Riviera every single time, and the ritual is always the same and always perfect: wake early, pour the coffee, and walk straight off the terrace into a lagoon pool that runs nearly the width of the resort before anyone else is up. Some mornings the beach out front is soft and beautiful; some mornings it’s rocky or a little seaweedy — and honestly, I’ve barely clocked the difference, because I’m already floating, drink balanced on the pool edge, watching the sky go pink. The pool was always where the trip actually happened.
Booking the swim-up room you’ll want to sink into
A few gentle things set you up for that morning:
- Choose the swim-up category on purpose. Not “a room near the pool” — the real magic is water that starts at your own terrace. That’s the room that becomes the vacation.
- Pick a resort built around its pools. You want big, beautiful, multi-pool resorts with a proper adults-only side, so the pool deck can carry a whole slow day. Secrets Maroma Beach and UNICO 20°87° are dreamy exactly this way.
- Want the pool and the prettiest odds at the sand? Lean to the north- and island-sheltered stretches — Playa Mujeres, the Cancún strip, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel — which tend to fare better than the east-facing Riviera Maya. Atelier Playa Mujeres and Excellence Playa Mujeres sit on that friendlier side, swim-up and all.
- Peek at a live map before you fly. Conditions shift day to day with the wind, so a quick look at a daily sargassum tracker near your dates lets you pack your expectations along with your swimsuit.
Or bring the swim-up to a calmer coast: Jamaica
And if you love the sound of all of this but you’d still like a real shot at a clean beach too, here’s the happy secret: you don’t have to trade the swim-up morning to get it — you just change the coast. Jamaica’s northwest, around Montego Bay and the sheltered Hanover–Trelawny shore, tends to catch far less sargassum than the Mexican Caribbean, and the resorts there pour the exact same adults-only, all-inclusive, step-off-your-terrace ritual. Ocean Eden Bay and Princess Senses the Mangrove both hand you a swim-up room on a coast that stays clearer more often — the pool you came for, with the sand as a genuine bonus.
If the beach itself is the dream
There’s one kind of traveler none of this is quite for: if a pristine, snorkel-clear beach is the whole point — the open water is the vacation — then that’s a different trip to an island that sits outside the sargassum belt — Curaçao, say — and it deserves to be planned on its own terms. But if your happiest place is a swim-up pool with a cold drink and a warm view, sargassum changes far less about your week than the headlines make it sound.
Come for the water that’s already yours
So don’t let a seaweed headline talk you out of a beautiful trip. Book the swim-up room, and let the vacation come to you — warm water at your door before breakfast, a drink within reach, the beach a lovely bonus on the mornings it shows up. Picture that first morning again. Then go book it.
